modal/modern Bach/almost free jazz (2001)

Brad Mehldau, piano
Larry Grenadier, bass
Jorge Ross, drums

The piano trio has endured for decades and has been both representative of the stylistic period and the pianists personal style. The trio offers an intimate sound that shows both ensemble skills and solo prowess. Mehldau is well within the tradition of the modern pianist as defined by Bill Evans. He has powerful expressive ideas and works here with a very sympathetic rhythm section. This is a long improvisation (for which he is known) and difficult to follow for new listeners. Try to stay with it. Follow the listening notes to help keep you engaged.
